Arlan A. Baillie
Steinway Performance Series

The Arlan A. Baillie Steinway Performance Series consists of piano performances, instrumental performances with piano accompaniment, student piano performances, and occasional piano master classes. The events are all open to the public with no admission charge. The Arlan A. Baillie Steinway Piano is a gift to All Souls Congregational Church and the community from the Christopher Hutchins family in memory of Ruth R. and Curtis M. Hutchins. All costs for the piano and its programs are covered by an endowment fund created as part of the gift. If you would like to be notified by email or regular mail about upcoming performances, please contact the church office at churchoffice@allsoulsbangor.com or by telephone at 207-942-7354.

The annual student performances feature specially chosen students of area piano teachers. The students perform works of their own choosing with no restriction as to style. Piano teachers are invited to select up to three of their students of any age, who are showing good progress in their playing. The level of playing may be from novice to advanced. Piano teachers not already on our mailing list may receive registration materials by contacting the church office.

The Arlan A. Baillie Steinway Piano

The piano is a 1916 style B instrument, 6 feet 10 ½ inches long.  Its case is made of burled mahogany.  It had been owned by Dr. and Mrs. Terence O’Callahan, 92 Main Street, Orono, and became available at auction in 1996.  The Hutchins family purchased the piano and sent it to Steinway and Sons on Long Island, New York, for structural restoration.  It was then delivered to M. Steinert & Sons, which is Steinway & Sons’ representative in Boston, where the action was rebuilt.  The case was then refinished by an independent contractor in Stoneham, Massachusetts.  The piano arrived at All Souls Church in the fall of 1997. The dedicatory concert took place in November of that year.

The piano fulfilled a dream of Arlan A. Baillie, who was the third minister (1943-1955) and Minister Emeritus of All Souls.  His dream was to have quality piano music available in the All Souls meetinghouse.  The piano is also the means to fulfilling Mr. Hutchins’s goal of inspiring young artists by making the piano available to the broader community.
