The Hope Window

The Hope WindowThe Hope Window is inscribed "In Memory of Harold Ransom Edwards, 1818-1941."

St. Paul, who for the hope of Israel was bound with a chain of captivity to Rome (Acts 28:20), is the subject of the left lancet. He holds the book and sword of his martyrdom.

The central figure is Job who maintained a steadfast hope through a myriad of trials. His eyes are turned upward and he holds an open book in which is written “Though he slay me yet will I trust in him.” (Job. 13:15) High on one side of him and low on the other are green devils torturing him with spears. Lightning and arrows are also directed to him.

The figure in the right lancet is St. Elizabeth, mother of John the Baptist, whose hope was fulfilled that though “well stricken in years” (Lk. 1:18) she should bear a son.
