The Prophets Windows
Of the single window most westerly in the north transept group Connick wrote: “Isaiah, the evangelical prophet, besides holding the scroll of his prophetic writings also bears the pen as he listens to divine inspiration symbolized by the nimbed dove. The kneeling angelic figure in the base panel holds the tongs and coal of heavenly fire with which the Seraph touched his lips in token of his divine eloquence. Isaiah is robed in fine clear white and brilliant ruby, medieval color symbols of purity and divine love, while the rich blue of the background suggests heavenly contemplation. The rest of the description is like that of the adjoining group of three windows.”
The memorial inscription in the Isaiah window, at the left of the north transept as one faces it, is In Loving Memory of S. Alice Ranlett, 1853-1942; that running through the Jeremiah and Ezekiel Windows is Charles A. Moore, D.D. Pastor 1911-1936 and his wife Jean Bailey Moore; that of the Daniel window, In loving Memory of Charles D. Crosby, 1863-1939 Miriam R. Crosby, 1862-1926.
In describing his plans for the north transept windows Connick wrote in April 1943 of the group of three most easterly: “Each Prophet holds the scroll of his prophetic writings and bears his distinctive symbol. The Sorrowful Jeremiah has the chain to symbolize his inspired service during his captivity, the priestly Ezekiel, the lighted torch, symbolic of religious zeal, the princely Daniel, the starred scepter to symbolize his descent from the Kings of Judah."
“The kneeling angelic figures in the bases bear the related symbols – again the chains for Jeremiah, the censer for Ezekiel and the crown for Daniel."
“Surrounding the Figures and outlining the fine pure blue of the background are decorative canopies relating these to the neighboring windows. Through the borders of these canopies, I have suggested little figures – of related Old Testament Kings and Patriarchs that will also recall the ancestry of Christ in the tradition of the line of descent from Jesse. These will include Salmon, Roboam, Abia, Asa, Josaphat, Joram, Joash, Ozias, Joatham, Achas, Ezekias, Manasses, Among, Josias, Jechonias, Eleazar, Matthan, Jacob, Josepth."
