Summer Worship Schedule & Guest Preachers

Summer brings a change of pace—and a shift in our weekly rhythm at All Souls. Beginning on Sunday, July 5, our worship service will move to 9:00 a.m. (instead of 10:00 a.m.) for the months of July & August.

We invite you to join us a little earlier in the day as we gather for worship, prayer, and community. Following the service, we will continue our tradition of Coffee Hour in the Vestry, offering a time for fellowship, conversation, and refreshment.

During this season, we are also blessed to welcome a variety of voices to the pulpit. As our pastors take well-deserved time for rest and renewal, our supply preachers will lead us in worship and share meaningful and inspiring messages.

July 5 – Rev. Chad Poland

All Souls Pastor and Teacher

July 12 – Rev. Dr. James Haddix

Dr. Haddix, All Souls Minister Emeritus, was our Pastor and Teacher at All Souls Church for over 26 years, retiring in 2016. He graduated from Boston University School of Theology, earning his Th.M. degree and graduated magna cum laude in 1971. Named a Frank D. Howard Fellow at Boston University, he continued his studies at Boston University's Graduate School. He earned a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies (Old Testament) in 1980.

July 19 – Janis Balda

Janis grew up in church in the broadest sense of the word. Her father was an Army Chaplain, her mother a licensed Methodist preacher, and early in their marriage they were missionaries in the Cayman Islands. Her brother was a minister in the United Church of Canada and one of her sisters taught in a Presbyterian mission school in Caracas, Venezuela. Janis and her husband Wes were married in a Presbyterian Church in San Diego, California, and their first child was baptized in the Church of England in Cambridge, UK. So, it is not surprising that Janis (after earlier graduate work in theology) eventually was ordained and took on a ministerial role as Minister of Outreach in the Vineyard church their family attended for over 20 years.

She also spent many years as a nonprofit attorney and served as the first in-house legal counsel for World Vision International, a Christian relief and development organization. In the early 2000s she returned to grad school to earn an MA in Management and a Ph.D. in Education and has spent the last 15 years teaching international management and leadership, international business and sustainability.

Janis and Wes joined All Souls in 2024, as a result of experiencing church online and participating in Street Pastors. As “newer” members of All Souls, she and Wes have appreciated the ways in which the church seeks to serve those outside its borders, as well as those within.

July 26 – Anna Phillips

Anna Phillips, MA is an instructor of Biblical Context. One of her greatest joys is guiding people to understand more about the daily lives of ancient people: those who were the first people to experience, hear, and tell the story of God. She believes studying the scriptures together, asking questions and digging below the surface, can give us all more clarity or a deeper relationship with God. Anna grew up in the woods in Penobscot and was educated in a mix of public, homeschool, and private schools in Maine before earning an undergraduate degree in forensic archeology at Vassar College and a master’s degree in biblical history and geography (emphasizing the Old Testament) at Jerusalem University College in Israel. Anna has completed many additional courses and seminars focused, among other topics, on modern middle eastern history and understanding Old/New Testament context. Since returning to live full time in Maine, Anna has taught and preached in various settings. Currently, she serves as the coordinator for the Greater Bangor Area Street Pastors and sits on the board of Dignity First, both organizations dedicated to outreach and service among the neediest populations in the greater Bangor area. Anna's hobbies include tending to a flock of backyard poultry, doing therapy work with her family’s poodle, traveling as widely as she can, and reading texts both fascinating and challenging.
